12月の朝6時、夜明け前の会場にテスラモデルSが止まっていた。EV紳士の朝は早い。椅子とテーブルをセットする。ホームセンターで買った味気ないキャンプテーブルでも、クロスをかけるといい雰囲気になる。寒いのでひざ掛け代わりの寝袋を配る。防寒対策をすれば冬キャンプも楽しい。豚汁を作る準備をしてきたのに、味噌を忘れてしまった。でも料理を作る暇もないほど、あっという間に時間が過ぎた。
河口湖から来てくれた、とある紳士の話をしたい。
彼は数年前まで会社を経営していたが、いい年齢になったので後継者に事業を譲り、自分は引退することにした。しかし引退しても、これといってやることがない。顧問として会社に残ることも考えたが、それは好みじゃない。さてこれから何をしよう。
何気なく聞いていたラジオで、南アフリカ出身のとある起業家が紹介されていた。ペイパルというオンライン支払いサービスをつくり、テスラという自動車会社でEVをつくり、巨大なロケットで火星に行こうとしている、その男の名はイーロン・マスク。それは全て人類のためだという。
ラジオを聞いた彼は何かを感じとった。すぐに本屋に行きイーロン・マスクの本を手に取った。そしてすっかりイーロン・マスクのビジョンに陶酔してしまった。ほどなくしてイーロン・マスクが作ったテスラ社の電気自動車「モデルS」を手に入れた。
しかし日本の都会は道が狭く交通量の多かった。もっとEVに乗るために富士山が望める河口湖のほとりに家を立てて引っ越した。
さらに購入したモデルSを次々と人々に勧めて、試乗させたその数なんと500人以上。購入したのは5人という普及活動を進めている。地元の自動車整備士学校に出向いてEV講演会をしたり、富士スバルラインのEV・FCVパレードランを企画したりと、多方面に活動し地元のTVにも多数出演している。
コーヒーを飲みながらイーロン・マスクのビジョンとテスラそしてEVを語る彼の姿は、まさに夢と希望に燃えるベンチャー企業の社長であった。彼の活動はこれからも続くだろう。何歳になっても心に灯がついている人はカッコイイ。
いつか富士山の見える河口湖でEVOMを開催したいと思う。きっとまた彼に会えるだろう。

Fuji can see from a city with narrow roads and heavy traffic.
